If memory seems increasingly a burden, a fog whose leaden presence descends like a nightmare on thought, it is because it’s increasingly both over- and underdetermined, flushed with the noxious emanations that Esther Leslie has called “clouds of theory” & characterised by a too-capacious corralling of various, sluggish particles. Like Hamlet & Polonious, pundits, artists & theorists stand mooning while it tousles by, speculating what it looks like. The dread spectacle of the Whitechapel’s (useful) anthology is enough evidence, turning any historical practice of memory to use, turning the brand of memory (“on account of their scars“) into a brand in the other sense, a personal brand to be replicated & circulated, the market niches of identity politics: memory becomes a genre in contemporary art in the way that, half a century ago now, Pop was. Part of the blame can be laid on Sebald’s Anglophone (particularly English) reception, in wh/ genuine historical anguish came to function as an alibi for an endless trot down memory lane (“remember 45s? remember Rembrandt? remember trees? remember boredom?”) The actual content of remembrance is trumped by the fetishised form of memory, memory as hook, credentials, marketing ploy. (This is exactly what has happened in the case of the ‘theme’ of memory in Marker studies: “the image of happiness” becomes that of the cash register.) Memory, wh/ once denaturalised the atemporal claims of pastoral*, that cuts through the lived historical textures of suffering & ruined fulfilment, has itself become pastoral. (I write this partly b/c the more I think about my own memories, in wh/ I once felt & still sometimes feel there were resources for the creation of forms of bearable life w/in the damaged one, the more I come to wish to abandon them & the life that made them up, seemingly entirely composed of wrong decisions, in the blaze of anonymity.)
